If you feel you or your child might be dyslexic it’s a wise idea to arrange an assessment.
Screening can be useful for indicating whether dyslexia might be present, but in order to find out for sure a full assessment, either by an Educational Psychologist or a suitably qualified specialist tutor is needed.
Dyslexia affects different people in different ways and a full assessment will highlight the areas of difficulty and possibly also of strengths in an individual’s profile. This will help to get the support needed to move forwards.
Having a full report can help your child’s teacher to support his/her learning. If you are considering extra help for you or your child, the report will also provide ideas for what needs to be done and how to progress.
An assessment will take a minimum of two or more hours and will include tests of underlying ability as well as assessments of reading, writing, spelling and perhaps maths. Finally, there will be some diagnostic tests looking at areas in which dyslexics are known to have difficulties. Costs vary but generally a full assessment followed up by a written report. The cost is usually for specialist teacher assessment £300-400 and Educational Psychologist £500-600.
